Obertauern - A beautiful ski resort in the heart of Austria

The Resort:

Obertauern is one of Austria’s newest ski resorts, combining 100km of well-groomed piste with 26 lifts for easy access. The resort is located in Salzburgerland in Central Austria, just a two-and-a-half-hour drive from Munich, with easy access to Salzburg and Innsbruck airports. Winter sports take place in the alpine bowl of the Radstadt Tauern mountains between the elevations of 1630 and 2312m. The resort has a lively feel as well as having great snow reliability making it a fantastic destination for a classic Austrian ski trip.

Skiing in Obertauern:


With huge lengths of wide cruising pistes, Obertauern is a great resort for skiers developing their skills. On top of these wide-open runs there are brilliant off-piste opportunities to be explored as well as multiple steep areas and bowls for the more advanced skiers in your group. The lift system allows for easy access to harder pistes nice confidence has been built up, with the mogul runs, located near the Gamsleiten chairlift, particularly attractive to those looking to test their ability. There is also ‘The Spot’ – a Snowpark filled with ramps and rails that attracts many snowboarders. Obertauern balances steep terrain and gentle runs well, whilst also boasting several fast chair lifts that have the added benefit of being heated.

For Schools Because:

For beginner skiers, there are nursery slopes, conveniently located close to accommodation, that can be used to hone skills before moving on to the bigger slopes, making Obertauern an ideal location for mixed ability groups. It’s also a great pick for a school trip due to it’s impressive snowmaking reliability, as great conditions and a long season are almost always guaranteed. Additionally, the ski in ski out accommodation options makes it accessible and hassle free for large groups. On top of this, there is easy public transport access and car parking space as well as some of the highest snowfall of non-glacier ski resorts in Austria.

Après ski:

The resort has a lively feel with multiple sun terraces and restaurants to enjoy during day breaks. Towards the end of your day on the slopes there are multiple mountain restaurants to enjoy traditional Austrian cuisine from. For those who want a day away from the slopes, the beautiful city of Salzburg is an hour and a half drive away and is a great opportunity to take in some historic landmarks, do some shopping and eat some delicious food. The picturesque town of Radstadt, with old castle walls and towers, is also a short drive away. And for those who want to stay on the mountains but have a break off the skis, there are multiple winter walking trails with magnificent views.
